OpenAI Unveils GPT-4 – Top 8 Things To Expect

The wait is finally over – GPT-4, OpenAI’s highly anticipated successor to GPT-3, has been released. This new version of OpenAI’s sophisticated AI represents the most advanced version of the company’s capabilities — everything from passing tests to taking cues from images.

It is poised to redefine natural language processing (NLP) in ways never thought possible”.

There are, however, some limitations to the tool, according to the company. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, tweeted the following on March 14, 2023, about the launch of GPT-4:

“We present GPT-4, the most effective and aligned model to date. You can access it today in ChatGPT+ and through our API (with a waitlist).” He also added that “It is still flawed, still limited, and initially seems more impressive than it does once you learn more about it.”

Though these remarks have been made, you shouldn’t let them dampen your curiosity since it’s a top release. Let’s take a look at the top 8 things you can expect from GPT-4.

What to expect from GPT-4

8 Things To Expect From GPT-4

#1 – Unprecedented Accuracy And Reach

As the world’s largest and most accurate language model to date, GPT-4 has over 10 trillion parameters, making language generation and understanding even more precise. With this capability, it will be able to better understand context, understand complex sentence structures, and generate more logical content output.

GPT-4 unprecedented accuracy

Moreover, OpenAI describes GPT-4 as “exhibiting human-level performance on a variety of academic and professional benchmarks.” We demonstrated this by putting GPT-4 through a series of human-level questionnaires and standardized tests, including the SAT and BAR, without any training. GTP-4 not only understood and solved these tests across the board with relatively high scores but also surpassed GPT-3.5.

Due to the much larger word limit in GPT-4, it is also easier to understand more nuanced input prompts.

At present, this new model can handle input prompts of up to 25,000 words (in comparison, GPT-3.5 could only handle prompts of up to 8,000 words). This directly impacts the amount of detail users can include in their prompts, allowing the model to process more information and produce longer results.

GPT-4 supports more than 26 languages, including languages with low resources, such as Latvian, Welsh, and Swahili. A benchmark based on three-shot accuracy on the MMLU benchmark, GPT-4 outperformed GPT-3.5 and other leading LLMs like PaLM and Chinchilla for English-language performance.

#2 – Enhanced Multi-Modality

Enhanced multi-modal capabilities enable GPT-4 to process and generate text along with other modalities. Audio, video and images are primary examples.

With the help of enhanced multi-modality, GPT-4 can let you generate more rich and more diverse content, creating a more human-like experience through visual and auditory cues, and enhancing its versatility for a wide range of applications.

GPT-4 multimodality

Games, media, and advertising, where multi-format content is essential, could significantly benefit from this capability.

Moreover, GPT-4’s capability to read images goes far beyond simply interpreting them. An example of this was included in OpenAI’s developer stream where they provided GPT-4 with a mockup of a joke website that was hand-drawn.

As part of the task, the model was required to write HTML and JavaScript code to transform the mockup into a website replacing the jokes with real ones.

GPT-4 generated the code according to the layout outlined in the mockup. As you might expect, the code resulted in a working site with jokes.

Does AI advancement mean programming will cease to exist? While it may not be a game changer, programming assistants can still benefit from it.

Despite its potential, it is still in the research preview stage and unavailable to the public.

On the other hand, OpenAI itself claims that the model could take a long time to get faster as it processes visual inputs.

#3 – Advanced Meta-Learning

GPT-4 is equipped with meta-learning techniques e.g. few-shot and zero-shot learning. This allows it to quickly adapt to new tasks and receive more from previous models.

Few-shot and zero-shot learning are especially useful in cases where there are few examples available for a particular task, for instance, in personalized recommendation systems.

#4 – Improved Interactivity and Responsiveness

GPT-4’s advanced meta-learning capabilities, combined with its enhanced scale and accuracy, make it a more interactive and responsive system. Both of these elements also help the program facilitate more complex conversations and provide users with more customized responses.

It is also possible for GPT-4 to provide human-like interactions with machines and ultimately transform the way we interact with them.

With all of this in mind, you can expect GPT-4 to be even more effective when paired with chatbots or virtual assistants.

#5 – Longer Memory

Despite being trained on millions of web pages, books, and texts, GPT-4 is limited in terms of what it knows when it is speaking with a user.

GPT-4 longer memory

GPT-3.5 and the old version of ChatGPT had a limit of 4,096 “tokens,” equivalent to about 8,000 words, close to a book’s 4-5 pages.

GPT-4, however, can hold 32,768 tokens, which is 2^15, in case you’re wondering. In all, it consists of approximately 64,000 words, or a little more than 50 pages, the length of an entire play or short story. Therefore, it can keep up to 50 pages in memory during a conversation or when generating text. For instance, GPT-4 is capable of remembering your conversations 20 pages ago or referring to 35-page old events in a story or essay.

Token count and attention mechanisms are merely estimates, but we’re talking about expanded memory and the abilities that come along with it.

#6 – Safety Enhancements and Ethical Considerations

With advancements in language models, ethical and safety considerations are becoming more and more critical. As opposed to GPT-3, GPT-4 has more robust safety features, such as enhanced language filtering and toxicity detection, designed to prevent abusive or harmful language.

Furthermore, GPT-4’s development has prioritized ethical considerations, such as bias detection and mitigation, to ensure its outputs are fair and unbiased.

#7 – Applications in Scientific Research

Due to GPT-4’s unprecedented scale and accuracy, it is able to produce more precise and accurate language in natural language processing, bioinformatics, and computational biology.

Research in fields such as drug discovery, disease diagnosis, and machine learning is likely to benefit from this advancement.

#8 – Improved Performance

In terms of the factual accuracy of answers, GPT-4 offers an improvement compared to GPT-3.5. For example, the model makes fewer “hallucinations,” or mistakes, achieving a 40% higher score on OpenAI’s internal factual performance benchmark than GPT-3.5.

Moreover, it is easy to see how flexible the program is through its improved steerability or adaptability to user input. Using the command line, you can instruct it to write in a different style or tone, or even speak in a different voice. You can use this to your advantage, like taking on the role of an empathic listener, or you can exploit it to your disadvantage, such as convincing the model to behave badly.

In a good way, if you use a prompt like “You’re an obnoxious data expert”, then you will learn everything about a data science concept.

Now, let’s see the capabilities of GPT-4.

What GPT-4 can do?

Currently, ChatGPT is an open-source text generator based on GPT-3.5 where a user can communicate with the “chatbot” using text on almost any topic. However, the service extends beyond writing essays, articles, and poetry. It generates meaningful responses, leads debates, generates functional code, and writes almost anything you want.

The GPT-4, on the other hand, is a multimodal solution, which means that it can handle multiple data, including images, text, speech, and numerical data, using an array of intelligent algorithms for accurate and efficient results.

The model is no longer limited to being a linguistic model.

Let’s see what you can do with GPT-4 now that it’s out.

You can generate and build anything with GPT-4 (some limitations apply)

You can use GPT-4 to generate and build things! To get exactly what you need, provide the prompt with a little bit of detail.

Write me a discord bot, for example.

Moreover, if you assign ChatGPT-4 the role of AI programming assistant in the systems section, it will create code for you. In conjunction with the prompt, this will ensure that the assistant produces what you requested.

Check whether the code generated by the assistant works. In case of an error, start a new prompt with that error and the assistant will provide you with the correct code block.

Do this until your code works and direct the assistant accordingly.

You can use visual inputs in GPT-4

GPT-4 now supports image inputs (research preview only; not public yet) as well as text inputs. It is even possible to specify any vision or language task by inserting interspersed text and pictures.

Charts, memes, and screenshots of academic papers below are some examples of how GPT-4 can correctly interpret complex images.

It can even help you ace your exams

In the early days of OpenAI, its performance on SAT tests and Advanced Placement courses made waves in the world of education. This version (GPT-4) is far superior in every way compared to its predecessors.

Below is the list of aced exams.

List of GPT-4 aced exams

For instance, a simulated bar exam showed that GPT-4 passed with a score in the top 10 percent, while GPT-3.5 passed with a score in the bottom 10 percent.

On the other hand, when compared with GPT-3, GPT-4 scored 710 on the SAT reading and writing section. GPT-4 also scored 110 points higher on the SAT math test than GPT-3.5.

Moreover, according to the AP Biology tests, GPT-4 scored a 5, while GPT-3.5 scored a 4. GPT-4 got a 4 on the AP Calculus BC exam, which was a significant increase over GPT-3.5’s 1. The GPT-4 still struggles on some other tests, however. In AP English Language and Literature, a GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 both passed with 2.

You can generate better computer code with GPT-4

With GPT-4, you can write computer code in Javascript, Python, and C++, which are commonly used in web development, software development, and data analysis.

It was reported earlier this year that OpenAI was hiring developers and programmers – specifically, developers who can explain what their code does in human language. Many believe that GPT-4 can set new standards for computer code generation.

When was GPT-4 launched?

GPT-4 was released by OpenAI on March 14, 2023, just four months after ChatGPT was released in November of 2022.

How can I access GPT-4?

Due to OpenAI’s focus on collaborating with a single partner, GPT-4’s visual input capabilities are not yet available on all platforms. There are, however, ways to use GPT-4’s text input.

Text-input capabilities can only be accessed by OpenAI subscribers through ChatGPT Plus, a $20 monthly subscription. Even if you subscribe to this service, there will still be a user cap, limiting your access at times as you need it, which is something you should consider before signing up.

Bing Chat is the only way for users to access the text-based features of GPT-4 for free.
